Children’s
Cancer Institute

✏️ Role

An incredible journey with We Discover. Very grateful to have contributed as a Product Designer for a bit more than a year to such a wonderful project.

Together with CCI’s digital transformation team we developed a new digital platform for the Zero Childhood Cancer Program (ZERO)—Australia’s world-leading precision medicine program for kids with cancer.

🚀 Output

  • Zero Dash Phase 1. Feature enhancements

  • Zero Dash Phase 2. Feature release.

Zero Dashboard: How it works?

Each child participating in ZERO has their cancer analysed at a molecular level, with the aim of identifying genetic alterations that could be driving the cancer’s growth. The results of this detailed analysis have the potential to inform many aspects of the child’s care, from diagnosis, prognosis, and risk stratification through to treatment. However, for this to happen, huge amounts of data generated by the analysis must first be processed and interpreted for clinical significance.

Digital transformation. The outcome:

  • By streamlining ZERO’s data matching and interpretation processes, ZeroDash reduces the time taken to generate a precision medicine report for a child by a massive 70 per cent.

  • Increase patient enrolment by eightfold with only a 25% increase in personnel.

  • The platform has significant potential to expand further, perhaps to all 151,000 newly diagnosed adult cancer patients each year in Australia, or to support developing countries maximise their very limited healthcare personnel to realise the benefits of precision medicine.

Ways of working

I follow the double diamond creative process. The whole process is guided by customer activity, pain points and feedback. Agile methodologies. Research, Design, Learn, Repeat.

  • Inception phase: question and inform the product brief, set requirements, business objectives and get backing from the business to kickstart the initiative.

  • Research & discovery: Diverging. Testing strategy. Quantitive & Qualitative. Continue to refine data findings to support design thinking.

  • Concept: Draft hypothesis and validate with customers. Test, iterate, test, etc.

  • Define: Consolidate learnings, enhance designs. Play back to business. Get ready to roadmap.

  •  Development: Technical Design for development. Build, test, iterate.
